Summer is here, and baseball is in the air once again!
Every year, the country’s baseball fans turn their eyes toward Omaha, and Omaha turns its eyes to the field downtown. The annual College World Series tradition is something almost all Omahans hold fondly in one way or another.
Rosenblatt Stadium is no more, but the current home of the College World Series is giving us its own reasons to fall in love all over again. TD Ameritrade Park is situated very close to the Missouri River and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. This makes for great views from behind home plate and also gives visiting fans something to do before or after games.
The Old Market in downtown is expecting to see a lot of foot traffic during the College World Series. The bars and restaurants there catch fans stopping by on their way to afternoon games, and the evening crowd looking to keep the party going after night games.
If you’re visiting Omaha and looking for a bite to eat, there are great restaurants within walking distance of the stadium. For casual dining, places like Burger Theory or the Old Mattress Factory serve great eats. Spencer’s Steaks and Chops or Sullivan’s Steakhouse downtown both offer a more formal dining experience with great steaks.
The fun begins this Friday, June 15th. The Opening Celebration Day festivities will kick off the College World Series as they always do: with a bang, in the form of the annual fireworks show.
Bad weather has plagued the opening ceremonies a few times in the last handful of years, with fireworks or music being cancelled and even a weather evacuation. Have no fear, though: Sunday’s current forecast predicts no rain, partly cloudy skies, and a balmy 100-degree high.
Opening Celebration Day includes opportunities for fans to watch and interact with their teams’ players. Open practices and autograph sessions are scheduled for each of the eight teams coming to the College World Series.
Later, an eight-team parade precedes a parachuter show, country music from LOCASH, and the eagerly-anticipated fireworks display.
Below is a schedule for the day to help you plan your family’s day at the ballpark. The entire day is open to the public for free!
